Title: Towards Large-Scale Web Database Integration Systems
Abstract: The Web consists of millions of Web databases accessible through special Web query interfaces. In recent years, there have been lots of efforts in developing techniques to make the data in these databases accessible in an integrated manner. In this talk, I will first compare two leading paradigms in achieving such an integrated access, Centralized and Metasearching. The centralized approach applies deep crawling techniques to collect data from these Web databases and indexes them just like regular Web pages for centralized search. Metasearching provides a mechanism to interact with multiple Web databases and gather results from them for each query in an integrated manner on the fly. Then I will outline the main research problems under the metasearching paradigm and report some of our more recent efforts/results in tackling some of these research problems. I will also briefly introduce some ongoing work and future directions in this area.
Biography:
Weiyi Meng is currently a professor in the Department of Computer Science of the State University of New York at Binghamton. He received his Ph.D. from the Department of Computer Science at University of Illinois at Chicago in 1992. His research interests include metasearch engines, Web database integration systems, Internet-based information retrieval, information trustworthiness analysis, Web data quality, Web information extraction, sentiment analysis, and database management system. He is the co-author of three books “Deep Web Query Interface Understanding and Integration”, “Advanced Metasearch Engine Technology” and “Principles of Database Query Processing for Advanced Applications”. He has over 150 research publications. He has served as general chair and PC chair of several international conferences and served on the editorial board of several journals.
